We constantly hear comments about Nazare being filmed from the cliffs and the illusion this gives about waves looking bigger. I also had this opinion until I saw the opening wave. It is massive whether from above, from the channel, from behind, even from underwater...

true! that was easily a 15-20 meters wave

People can have any opinion they want, the fact that many days we can find 100 feet plus waves in Nazaré, its enough to shut the argument. You just have to be crazy enough to be in the water when this waves are around.

Brilliant wonderful sequences - I love those shot from the water nearby .. really give a sense of the huge monumental size of the waves, much more impressive than those shot from the shore

Sweet sweet lord. What an incredible monster of a wave. I've seen clips of surfers at Nazare, but I always thought it was a whole line of wave. It's good to know it's just the one wave, not a wall, but what a huge huge wave.

    • @NeoZeta

that was the great Ross Clarke-Jones, he wiped out later and was concussed when he got to shore and said he was done with Nazare for the rest of the season, and wanted to "go look at castles" (again concussion!)

That inside wave where the guy dives, and the ski gets pummeled, has got to be one of the worst “caught inside” waves ever. Look how tall and how HOLLOW it turned out to be. Breaking top to bottom, like the wedge. That musta been a brutal beating. I’m very surprised he survived. Can u imagine being where he was, and seeing this breaking on you. An amphitheater of water

"Not gonna make it back to the 'ski"... He quickly pushes it away and dives. It's also insane of viciously the previous wave got the jetski at 1:25: I was expecting a "smooth" rescue but apparently nothing is ever smooth at Nazaré!

it's hard to tell from so far away, but most of the surfers who try Nazare wear life vests to help buoyancy. One surfer (don't recall his name) invented a inflatable bladder on the surfers back that you can inflate to help.
